Barbados is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, not only the birthplace of pop sensation Rihanna, but also famous for its rum production, cricket playing, island culture and beautiful beaches. It’s a popular holiday destination because it has property to rent as well as luxury resort accommodation from where visitors can explore the island’s natural wildlife, and uncover some of its unusual history.
In the early 1800s, Barbados was considered one of the healthiest places to live, having approximately half as many deaths as the world average at the time. Once rumours spread about Barbados’s “health cure”, people travelled from far and wide to test the theory. The practise emerged of totally burying oneself (except for the head) in the soft sands of the beaches of Cattlewash in St. Andrew.
Visitors to the little town of Cattlewash in St. Joseph’s Parish nowadays can visit the local spa and enjoy a massage or beauty treatment in a restful beachfront setting. Take a walk around the village or tinker among the rock pools at the beach. The “soup bowl” shoreline is popular among surfers, although the water is not recommended for swimming due to unpredictable currents.
Book Barbados holidays and take a restorative cure on the soft sands and in the gentle waves of this island’s world-famous beaches.
